Careers in Data Science at New York University

The NYU Center for Data Science (CDS) and our affiliated departments are currently looking to fill the following faculty positions. Please click on the link at the bottom of each description for further detail and an online application.

Professor of Data Science & Mathematics:
The Center for Data Science (CDS) and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences seeks candidates for an open rank faculty position, anticipated to begin September 2018. Appointments may be made at either a junior or senior level. CDS focuses on the intersection between applied mathematics, data science, high-dimensional statistics, and several data driven application areas (including but not limited to political science, biology, physics, and medicine), while the Courant Institute houses one of the top applied mathematics departments in the world. CDS and the Math department both hosts vibrant interdisciplinary PhD programs and several faculty at NYU are already jointly appointed at both the Center for Data Science and Courant. The ideal candidate will leverage existing strengths of the Courant Institute in applied mathematics to carry out data science research. Research focus areas including statistics, optimization, and the mathematical foundations of inference and data-representation are all attractive. Exceptional candidates from other data-science relevant areas will be considered as well. For more information or to apply, please click here (To ensure consideration, apply by Jan 15, 2018 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time).

Assistant Professor of Music/Sound Data Science:
New York University’s Music and Audio Research Laboratory (MARL) and NYU’s Center for Data Science invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin in September 2018. This a joint position between the two centers, with academic tenure housed in NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions. We are committed to substantially increase the proportion of our faculty from historically underrepresented groups as we strive to create the most intellectually diverse, inclusive, and equitable institution that we can, and especially encourage candidates from historically underrepresented groups to apply.

We seek applicants who can contribute both to methods and foundational knowledge in data science, as well as novel data-driven applications to music/sound search, scholarship, practice, learning, enjoyment and distribution. Interest area and field of specialization are open, although we are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to research and teaching in sub-fields of music/sound data science including, but not limited to: large-scale music/sound information retrieval, particularly text/symbol retrieval and natural language processing for mining information in the web and social media; machine learning, signal processing and/or high dimensional statistics applied to music and sound; music/sound ontologies, semantic web technologies, and graph-based approaches to knowledge representation and analysis; music/sound search, recommendation and personalization; lyrics and score analysis/retrieval; cross-modal analysis of music behaviors and interactions including from sound, video and wearable devices; and/or optical music recognition. For more information and to apply please click here (To ensure consideration, apply by Jan 26, 2018 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time).

Data Science Assistant/Associate Faculty:
The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department, part of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering in New York University (NYU), and the Center for Data Science (CDS) at NYU invite applications for a joint, open rank, Assistant/Associate Faculty, Data Science, Tandon Computer Science and Engineering and Center for Data Science.

NYU is one of the top private universities in the United States. The faculty and students of the CSE Department are at the forefront of the high-tech start-up culture in New York City and have access to world-class research centers in visualization, imaging and data analytics (VIDA), cyber security, wireless communications and the game innovation lab, among other areas. The department enjoys close collaborations with the Courant Institute, the NYU Media and Games Network (MAGNET), the Center for Urban Science and Progress, the School of Medicine, and other Schools of NYU. CDS is an interdisciplinary center established recently to advance NYU’s goal of creating the country’s leading data science training and research facilities, and arming researchers and professionals with tools to harness the power of big data. For more information and to apply, please click here.

Faculty:
The department of Computer Science expects to have several regular faculty positions and invites candidates at all levels to apply. We will consider outstanding candidates in any area of computer science, in particular in scientific computing, verification, programming languages, machine learning and data science.
Faculty members are expected to be outstanding scholars and to participate in teaching at all levels from undergraduate to doctoral. New appointees will be offered competitive salaries and startup packages.  In addition, we fully expect to secure affordable housing for the appointees within a short walking distance of the department. New York University is located in Greenwich Village, one of the most attractive residential areas of Manhattan.

The department has 36 regular faculty members and several clinical, research, adjunct, and visiting faculty members. The department’s current research interests include algorithms, cryptography and theory; computational biology; distributed computing and networking; graphics, vision and multimedia; machine learning and data science; natural language processing; scientific computing; and verification and programming languages. Collaborative research with industry is facilitated by geographic proximity to computer science activities at AT&T, Facebook, Google, IBM, Bell Labs, NEC, and SiemensPlease apply at https://cs.nyu.edu/webapps/facapp/register.

Other Data Science open positions

In addition to these positions NYU expects to announce shortly several other data-science-related opportunities including tenure-track faculty positions, software engineering positions at various levels, and evaluation positions for those who will help to assess the impact of our evolving Data Science Environment policies and practices.

Prospective faculty members should be experts in their fields and have research interests aligned with the emerging taxonomy of data science. These interests are primarily in mathematical statistics, computational statistics and machine learning, optimization and large-scale computation, system design for large-scale data science, and several application areas, such as artificial intelligence, computational biology, computational economics, or quantitative methods in social science.
